There are a variety of reasons why people spend time playing video games online. Reasons can include but are not limited to, reducing stress, social interaction, relieving tension, improving concentration and/or memory, increasing productivity, having fun and reducing boredom, and much more. As you can see, there are a lot of different benefits when it comes to playing video games online. And they all lead to one common benefit – reducing the stress of everyday life. In this article I want to discuss social anxiety and how online video games can help.

Social Anxiety is the irrational fear of social situations. Sufferers of social anxiety tend to avoid these situations until the problem has become so severe that it begins to interfere with their daily lives. Some common symptoms of social anxiety include, excessive sweating, trembling, muscle tension, nausea, dizziness, inability to concentrate, and problems with memory and concentration. So what happens when someone suffers from social anxiety when they are playing online video games? Let’s take a look at what is going on here…

Social Anxiety can have many different causes. In fact, for the sake of this discussion we will be looking at two of the biggest ones here: the Internet and spending time on online video games. To better understand the connection between these two, let’s first take a look at the Internet and online spaces. When you play video games online you are in what is called a virtual world, and you can go anywhere that the game tells you to.

However, this is not always a good thing. When you play video games online, you are not able to see other players in-person, nor are you able to hear them when they talk to one another. The only way a player can know if another player is present in-person is by hearing his / her voice, or seeing him or her. This is very different from in-person gaming, where both players can interact with each other and can hear and see one another, as well as being able to hear one another’s words.

So, what does all this have to do with communication research? We already know that when people are able to communicate with others and are able to physically see one another they tend to experience positive changes. In fact, these changes can be profound. As an example, a group of researchers conducted a study on two groups of teens. One group of teens played an online role playing game, while the other group of teens went into an “ordinary” real-world setting.
